RUPEE CLOSED SHARPLY HIGHER AGAINST THE US DOLLAR

Rupee rose against most major currencies except GBP. The rupee opened at 73.19 against the greenback and witnessed an intra-day high of 72.91 and a low of 73.25. In the past three sessions to Monday, the rupee had dropped by 53 paise or 0.73% amid rising US bond yields and a stronger dollar. The rupee strengthened by 34 paise to end at 72.92 against the US dollar on Tuesday, supported by positive domestic equities and weakening of the American currency in the overseas market.

On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex ended 584.41 points or 1.16 per cent higher at 51,025.48, while the broader NSE Nifty advanced 142.20 points or 0.95 per cent to 15,098.40.

The US dollar fell against most major currencies. The Euro jumped to 1.1898 from 1.1857 against dollar. The Australian dollar rose to $0.7708 from $0.7671. GBP and JPY were also traded up against USD on Today.
