Rupee appreciated against USD, JPY and CNY and depreciated against GBP and EUR. Rupee gained by 7 paise to 72.48 against the US dollar in opening trade, supported by positive domestic equity markets and easing crude prices. However, a strong US dollar against major currencies overseas restricted the rupee rise. Rupee touched an intra-day high of 72.42 and a low of 72.60 against dollar. Rupee erased some of its initial gains to end 4 paise higher at 72.51 against the US dollar.
On the domestic equity market front, the BSE Sensex ended 585.10 points or 1.17 per cent lower at 49,216.52, while the broader NSE Nifty dropped 163.45 points or 1.11 per cent to 14,557.85.
EUR/ USD was up 0.20% to 1.1933 while USD/JPY was up by 0.19% to 109.04.GBP/USD up by 0.59% to 1.39.
